Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition that causes enlarged breast tissue in men. The causes of common gynecomastia remain uncertain, but are thought to result from an imbalance between the actions of the estrogen and androgens at the breast tissue. It can occur in babies, (even while in the womb), in adolescent males and in the elderly. This condition does not cause physical pain and is not dangerous, but it can be psychologically distressing, especially for young men.

In many cases, gynecomastia will resolve over time; if not, there are excellent treatment options. These include liposuction and surgical excision of the excess tissue. Dr. Patel performs liposuction using the minimally invasive Slim Lipo (laser assisted liposuction). A tiny tube, called a cannula is used to suction out the fat. This procedure typically does not require stitches, and you can go back to work the next day.

The other option is excision surgery, where the glandular tissue is removed through a small incision. Recovery time is typically minimal with most patients returning to work the next day and returning to all normal activities within a week.
